API-U Qualified Crane Inspector
The course is intended to familiarize the participant with proper inspection and maintenance criteria and techniques as well as safety concerns associated with the development/revisions of JSA’s and lift plans. Intended to give the individual the knowledge and skills required to identify the major inspections areas to competently act as a Qualified Inspector and effectively conduct safe operations under their direct control
Target Audience: All persons who work with crane lifting and inspection operations, including:
- Experienced maintenance and inspection personnel.
- Mechanic technician/supervisor, deck foreman
- Personnel wishing to be a qualified inspector
Course Syllabus: Acquire competence in the theory and practice of the following
- Review of API RP 2D 7th Edition and Spec 2C 7th Edition
- Industry standards
- Terminology and definitions
- Typical records that must be maintained, including the following:
– Certifications for wire rope
– Crane inspection records to ensure that past inspections were appropriate for the type of crane usage - Wire rope mechanics/classification/characteristics
– Handling/installation/replacement criteria
– Wedge socket installation
– Rope maintenance (lubrication, storage and handling) - Load charts/information charts/safety factors
– Hoists
– Structural aspects of offshore cranes / structurally critical components / critical inspection areas
– Basic knowledge of NDE such as (dye penetrant procedures)
– Record keeping / review (how to review repair records and status of any open repairs)
– Measurement tools (calipers, dial gauges, etc.)
– Power units and compliance
– Boom inspection and repair.
– Emergency load lowering procedures (as applicable) - Crane mounting types and features (hook and roller, ball ring, king post)
- Boom structure (lattice, box, scoper, knuckle)
- Safety systems (boom luffing limit, hoist limits, boom stops and anti-two-block systems)
- Additional items (sheaves, hand signals, control identification and ESD systems
- Practical exercises shall include a minimum of eight (8) various hands-on exercises associated with crane inspections, such as:
– Tear down and troubleshoot hoist/winch
– Inspect swing circle assemblies (ball rings)
– Emergency load lowering
– Crane safety systems (ESD, anti-two-block systems, boom limits, swing limits, etc.)
– Wire rope inspection
– Prime mover
– Boom inspection
– Hoist brake testing
– Sheave inspection
– Inspection of hydraulic system
Competency: Satisfactory completion of the written and practical assessment elements is a prerequisite for successful award of a certificate.
